The harvest festival of Onam marks some of the greatest cultural heritage of Kerala passed down through the generations. This season celebrates prosperity, generosity and happiness. People all over Kerala don their traditional wear of whites with golden borders, cheer on snake boat races , create intricate and colourful designs with flowers and share a banquet of fellowship to celebrate this festival.
Well, of course 3E had to join in on the fun! Here’s a little peek into Team 3E’s Onam celebrations…
Onam is celebrated to welcome and revere King Bali the greatest ruler Kerala has ever seen, who visits the world annually from his confine in the underworld. Legend has it that the deity Vishnu disguised himself as a little boy and appeared before Mahabali requesting a boon of land that can be covered by his three little footsteps. On receiving the gracious king’s consent, Vishnu returned to his original form and covered the whole world with one step, the skies with another and then asked where he may place his final step. Mahabali, not wanting to go back on his word, bowed down and offered Vishnu his head to place his last footstep on, thus falling deep into the underworld where he was confined for eternity, except for his annual visit to the world to meet his beloved people of Kerala.
